An old tinderbox, a soldier’s luck and three extraordinary dogs. Andersen’s familiar tale takes you to a place where wonder begins behind the most ordinary door.
Full description
Returning from war, a soldier meets a witch and climbs down a hollow tree to fetch an old tinderbox. Below him are three chests and three extraordinary dogs — ahead lies a life that a single spark can turn upside down.
Andersen’s tales do not grow old with their readers: as children we hear adventure; later we discover the quiet irony and sadness we once missed. Generations around the world have grown up with these stories. The Danish storyteller spoke of kings and soldiers, tin figures and snow palaces as though telling a story about the neighbours. That is why his voice feels close at hand, rather than behind museum glass.
